Hydrogeology

Equipment for Hydrogeology

Excellent equipment

The hydrogeology department operates a large variety of field measurement devices to support state-of-the-art research and teaching activities.

With the equipment, the department is capable of performing classic hydraulic investigations such as pumping or tracer tests, water quality measurements and environmental monitoring.

Suction pump MP1

Powerful and reliable MP-1 submersible pump for pumping tests, tracer tests and water sampling. The pump is capable to operate with pumping rates of up to 34 litres per minute and pumping depths of 50 meters.

In-situ-sensors

  • In-Situ multi-parameter sensor (temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, oxygen, redox)
  • Pressure transducer (RugedTroll100, Eijkelkamp Micro-Diver)
  • Hand-held sensors for physicochemical parameters (temperature, elec. conductivity, pH, oxygen, redox)

Distributed Temperature Sensing

Continuous temperature monitoring along a fiber optic cable up to 2km.

  • AP Sensing Linear Pro N4386 control and monitoring unit
  • Ambient temperature monitoring, thermal tracer testing
  • The DTS system monitors the temperature distribution along a fiber optic cable with high precision.

Fieldphotometer

Portable LED photometer with 6 wavelengths for environmental monitoring and extensive water and routine analysis in (mobile) service laboratories.

Flow measurement via impeller

The impeller is moved by the water flow and through this the flow velocity of the water can be determined.

Flow measurement via magnetic induction

Due to the magnetic-inductive measuring principle, the device can also be used where hydrological measuring vanes or Doppler measuring systems reach their limits, e.g. with low flow velocities, heavily weedy waters as well as flowing waters with low suspended sediment content.

Laboratory lysimeter

Here the undisturbed sample is taken for the lysimeter.

This is used to carry out the column test from the unsaturated zone with artificial irrigation.

Permeameter

Permeability measurements on soil samples in the laboratory

Double-Packer-System

High-resolution hydraulic tests, tomographic tracer tests.

The packer system isolates specific borehole depth intervals for targeted sampling and injection. Equipped with the pneumatic slug test head, the system can be used for pneumatic slug testing at selected levels and for hydraulic tomography applications.

3D Printer

The 3D Printer allows to create precisely fitting individual parts for use in and with research equipment.

Pressure Sensors and Loggers

Pressure sensors record the groundwater level in wells over long periods of time.

Pressure and Temperature Loggers for Great Depths

To stationary record pressure and temperature in deep aquifers.

Soil Moisture Sensors

Soil moisture sensors measure the water content of soil, which allows to determine the groundwater recharge.

Turbidity Sensor

The turbidity of water is a general quality parameter, it is caused by the presence of small free-floating particles.

Spectral Sensor for N and C

Using spectral measurements, the sensor can determine the concentration of nitrate, dissolved and total organic carbon in the water.

Fluorometer

It measures the fluorescence of the water, and is used especially in connection with "colour tracers" such as uranine.

TDR System

The TDR system analyses the reflections of an electrical signal along a cable in the subsurface. This can be used to determine the water content of the surrounding rock.

Rain Collector

They are used to measure precipitation.

Autosampler

It allows an automated and regular water sampling.

Hand Drill Set

This allows to manually set up small near-surface groundwater monitoring wells.

Weather station

The weather station with remote data transmission permanently records data on temperature, air pressure, wind speed, relative humidity, soil moisture, solar radiation, precipitation.

The weather station is located near the Hobrechtsfelde experimental site and transmits its recorded data every 6 hours.

Experimental Hall

Experiments in research and teaching can be carried out here.
